This book contains a novel and unconventional approach for interpreting and understanding the flows and chemistries of field-scale drainages from reactive geologic materials.  Such materials include rock, soil, overburden, and tailings at mining operations. Recent advances in other sciences are adapted and applied to drainage, with emphasis on emergent properties important at larger scales. As the Preface points out about this novel approach, "Now I understand better what that past work was trying to tell me."

The first part of this book develops important large-scale concepts and models. For example, dynamic geochemical tension (illustrated as springs under tension), combined with geochemical phase transitions, can explain the stepwise, non-equilibrium trends in drainage chemistry. Also, fractal 1-over-f slopes in power spectra can show the overlapping, synergistic, self-organized effects of many physical, geochemical, and biological processes. In the last chapters of the book, these concepts and models are illustrated with case studies of full-scale minesites containing highly reactive geologic materials. In total, there are about 150 pages of text, figures, and tables, plus nearly 170 pages of graphical appendices.
