MDAGdata Short Stories
Services
- Data warehousing: we have been creating data warehouses for
more than 10 years.
- Example: over 40 years of chemical analyses, mostly in paper
files, were entered and integrated into a data warehouse
containing over 100,000 values.
- Data cleaning: the integrity of a warehouse is lessened if
the data are irrelevant or erroneous, so cleaning of the data
increases the value and benefits.
- Example: when justified, we have implemented various data
cleaning methods, like double-entry checking and interim client
liaison.
- Data analysis and mining: manipulation, graphing, examination,
and analysis of data
warehouses for special trends and patterns.
- Example: we have published conference papers on trends,
analytics, and
statistics from a data warehouse containing tens of thousands of
values from 200 related industrial facilities around the world.
- Information management, presentation, and security: data
warehouses and data mining provide little value if the results cannot
be accessed, checked, updated, and discussed by a client. We
provide flexible options for information management, including
- HTML-based intranets and websites
- Java-based applications
- Various graphics formats for bitmap and vector files
- PDF-based documents and libraries
- Microsoft Excel and Access
- SQL-based retrieval
- XML for long-term value and non-proprietary format
- Some additional and obviously biased observations:
- Websites reflect some combination of two basic endpoints:
information presentation and transfer, and flashy active
multimedia interaction. We emphasize the first endpoint much more
than the latter. Besides consuming bandwidth, multimedia
performances can be confusing, difficult to use and understand,
minimize the amount of screen used for interaction, and distract
from the core messages and information.
- From our perspective, security is enhanced by focusing on
individual instances of files, databases, warehouses, and
applications. If such items are placed on a network with open and
multiple access, then information integrity and security are at
greater risk. We identify a balance between collaborative work and
security that is specific to the task and people. In this way,
information is protected and maintained.
- Data analytics and mining requires more than just searching blindly for trends
- it requires an understanding of the data coupled with a keen
interest in thoroughly exploring the data warehouse, which is a
hallmark of our data mining.
- There may not be great glory in storing, transferring, and
mining information in warehouses, databases, and files. But, hey,
we really enjoy it! More important to our clients, we have shown
through our work that the return on investment can be significant
in terms of monetary value and corporate confidence.
